![]() ![]() Infantry and other combat-related MOS’ require the same level of performance from both males and females. She did just that she proved that she was capable of becoming an infantry Marine. “I know a lot of people doubt that females should be in the infantry, so I wanted to prove that I could do it,” Zamudio said with determination in her voice. ![]() “Hopefully this opens the door for more females.”ĭespite females having the option to join the infantry, it’s still not completely welcomed by society. “Knowing that the infantry is a male-dominant MOS, I wanted to prove that I can do a man’s job,” Zamudio exclaimed. Zamudio is the first entry-level female to accomplish the Infantry Marine Course on the west coast, trailblazing the path for females behind her to do the same. That’s also why I’m glad I joined the infantry because now I really know how far I can push myself.”įemales have been allowed to join the infantry since 2016, but they’ve only been able to earn the MOS at SOI East at Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Lejeune, not at SOI West at MCB Camp Pendleton. “After I graduated, I realized I could definitely push myself harder. “I had a lot of doubt in myself, thinking I wasn’t going to make it through recruit training” Zamudio said. She took it a step further by becoming the only female from that platoon to successfully earn the military occupational specialty (MOS) of infantry. This was monumental because female recruits have only ever trained and became United States Marines exclusively at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. Emily Zamudio, an infantry Marine currently assigned with Alpha Company, Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry (SOI) West, and scheduled to report to 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, made history when she graduated recruit training from the very first female platoon to train at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, May 2021. In a matter of months, one particular female Marine has made history not once, but twice, inspiring young girls and women throughout the United States that they can do whatever they set their mind to. ![]() ![]() ![]() Additional imaging was done if a patient's condition worsened. Computed tomographic scans were done for all of the patients on admission and before initiation of AC. Severe systemic bleeding was defined as any gastrointestinal tract, intra-abdominal, or external bleeding necessitating transfusion. Outcome measures and adverse events were captured prospectively. The decisions of whether to bridge and whether to use heparin or low-molecular-weight heparin were made based on clinical judgment and personal preference of the treating physician. In patients deemed candidates for AC, warfarin treatment is started in the hospital. As a general rule, in patients with large infarcts who were debilitated, there is an inclination to defer the decision of AC until the patient is stabilized. All of the patients were cared for by the same stroke team. Patients receiving thrombolytic therapy were excluded. A cardioembolic cause was diagnosed when the patient had 1 of the following: atrial fibrillation (by history or electrocardiography), mechanical heart valve, significant rheumatic valvular disease, severe focal cardiac wall motion abnormalities (in the absence of significant ipsilateral carotid atherosclerosis) or a cardiac clot visualized on an echocardiogram, and patent foramen ovale in the presence of venous thrombosis and in the absence of significant atherosclerosis. We conducted a retrospective review of all patients admitted to our stroke center who were diagnosed with CES from April 1, 2004, to June 30, 2006, and not treated with tissue plasminogen activator. Our aim was to compare these AC strategies, focusing on efficacy in preventing early stroke recurrence, risk of serious bleeding, functional outcome, and mortality. Because warfarin sodium takes several days to reach a therapeutic international normalized ratio (INR), 3 strategies are used during that period: warfarin alone or with aspirin (no bridging) intravenous heparin sodium combined with warfarin (heparin bridging ) and full-dose enoxaparin sodium (a low-molecular-weight heparin) combined with warfarin (enoxaparin bridging ). There is no consensus on the best way to initiate AC after CES. 3, 4 Nevertheless, most patients with CES ultimately need AC. 2 Current guidelines do not support the routine anticoagulation (AC) of patients with CES in the acute phase. 1 In addition, cardioembolic stroke (CES) carries increased risk of hemorrhagic transformation (HT). The infarct is typically larger than that in atherothrombotic stroke and the outcome is poorer. Published online J(doi:10.1001/archneur.65.9.noc70105).Ĭardioembolism accounts for 20% of ischemic strokes. Heparin bridging and enoxaparin bridging increase the risk for serious bleeding. Systemic bleeding occurred in 2 patients (1%) and was associated with heparin bridging ( P = .04).Ĭonclusions Anticoagulation of patients with cardioembolic stroke can be safely started with warfarin shortly after stroke. All of the symptomatic hemorrhagic transformation cases were in the enoxaparin bridging group (10%) ( P = .003). Hemorrhagic transformation occurred in a bimodal distribution-an early benign hemorrhagic transformation and a late symptomatic hemorrhagic transformation. Progressive stroke was the most frequent serious adverse event, seen in 11 patients (5%). Recurrent stroke occurred in 2 patients (1%). Results Two hundred four patients were analyzed. Main Outcome Measures Symptomatic hemorrhagic transformation, stroke progression, and discharge modified Rankin Scale score. Laboratory values were captured from the records. Outcome measures and adverse events were collected prospectively. Patients were grouped by treatment: no treatment, aspirin only, aspirin followed by warfarin sodium, intravenous heparin sodium in the acute phase followed by warfarin (heparin bridging), and full-dose enoxaparin sodium combined with warfarin (enoxaparin bridging). Still, uncertainty exists regarding the best mode of starting long-term anticoagulation.ĭesign, Setting, and Patients We conducted a retrospective review of all patients with cardioembolic stroke admitted to our center from April 1, 2004, to June 30, 2006, and not treated with tissue plasminogen activator. In 2020, as the pandemic devastated the country, major cities saw homicides increase more than 30%, and the crime surge seen last year has continued well into 2021. That comes against a backdrop of rising crime, though not all of it gun-related. In May, the archive told CNN there has been a 23% uptick in deaths from gun violence this year. More than 8,100 people have died from gun violence in the US this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, with over 240 mass shootings as of June 1. Those demands from the President were renewed in April, following mass shootings in South Carolina and Texas. If you’re after a cheaper option, buying a non-Retina display could be a good choice. It’s just good to be aware of the compromises. There’s also very legitimate reasons for using display scaling, or purchasing displays that can’t run macOS with 1:1 pixel mapping. Not everyone’s going to see these issues or be annoyed by them, but they are very real. The example on the right shows the same pattern with the “more space” display scaling option. The example on the left shows 1×1 pt checkerboard pattern with the “default for display” option. Here’s a couple of photos of a 14-inch MacBook Pro’s screen, taken at the same distance from the display. The example below shows a checkerboard being turned into a bit of a lumpy mess. When pixels aren’t mapped 1:1 with the macOS window buffer, scrolling means edges and thin lines shimmer when moving.Įven when elements aren’t moving, fine details can form moiré patterns. The main issue is that everything’s just blurrier with display scaling enabled. Please note that browser zoom, display scaling and other settings may make it harder to see the differences in the examples below. The images are also presented larger to make the issues more pronounced, but these problems can definitely be seen with the naked eye, once you know what to look for. The 4K display represents a common high-end display, with a pixel density of around 163PPI. The comparisons below are made by simulating a Studio Display on the left and a 4K UHD (3840×2160 pixel) 27-inch display on the right, with macOS display scaling set so text and elements are the same size. With those issues in mind, it’s far, far better to run macOS at the pixel density it was designed for. Display scaling also undoes dithering, which can mean gradients aren’t as smooth. However, display scaling comes with some significant caveats, including a blurrier picture, shimmering when scrolling, moiré patterns, worse GPU performance, and worse battery life if you’re using a laptop. This allows Macs to work with a wide range of displays with different pixel densities. ![]() Display scaling is a system preferences setting that renders your Mac’s screen to a virtual buffer that is larger or smaller than your display, and then scales the final result to fit. These choices dictate how physically large text and interface elements appear on the respective devices.Įverything above assumes macOS is being run without display scaling. This trades a little legibility for screen real estate, while also catering for the closer viewing distance (the closer you get to a display, the larger things look). Stray too far from 218PPI and macOS becomes unusable.Īpple’s laptops have slightly higher pixel density, at 227PPI and 254PPI for the MacBook Air and 16-inch MacBook Pro respectively. If a display’s PPI is lower, text and the macOS user interface will be larger. If a display’s PPI is higher, text and the macOS user interface will be smaller. MacOS has been designed to be legible and usable with a pixel density of about 218PPI (pixels per inch) for “Retina” class desktop displays. With that in mind, what are the criteria for a good external Mac display in 2022? Pixel density # The Studio Display hits an incredibly important target, and it can now be the default choice for discerning Mac designers and developers. ![]() It’s definitely true the Studio Display could have included local dimming, HDR, 120Hz refresh rate and other niceties, but I think that would have been the wrong choice if it meant a higher price. The Studio Display is precisely what I and many others have been asking Apple for - an iMac without the computer. Spec wise, it’s incredibly similar to LG’s 5K UltraFine, and the display of the now discontinued 27-inch iMac, even though it’s not using the same panel. Thankfully, Apple’s new Studio Display now provides a great option. It’s unclear to me if the product still exists as a going concern. Not only that, but the LG 5K UltraFine has been going in and out of stock globally. This effectively left the market with a single option - the LG 5K UltraFine. The Pro Display XDR surpasses the specs many Mac users need, which unfortunately also puts it out of reach for many financially.Ģ019 also saw an update to LG’s 4K UltraFine display, increasing its size from 21.5-inch to 23.7-inch, but lowering its resolution pixel density. In 2019, Apple announced their return to the display market, with an incredible product carrying an incredible price tag. LG, Dell, Samsung, and other display makers have either never catered for the specs many Mac designers and developers want, or they’ve reluctantly produced products that have been short-lived or compromised. Since writing about Mac external displays in 2016, not much has changed. ![]() ![]() Mac external displays for designers and developers, part 2 ![]() ![]() ![]() Its durable micro-mesh cover can slip under the lower row of roof shingles while the outer edge attaches to the gutter with screws for extra security.
