It breaks up, and sounds like a noise-gate thing is happening. It works, but the fuzz effect is mostly horrible. I think the bc183l I had cleaned up amazingly. 1 jhundt Doctor of Teleocity Joined Posts 12,881 Age 68 Location Netherlands I am trying to bring my old, original Heathkit TA-26 Fuzz back to life. This kit is based on the early model of this pedal which has seven gain. They are all different and that is just what I look for in the kind of ff's I like to use. The original Fuzz Face uses germanium PNP transistors (AC128 or NKT275) You should use a low gain for Q1 (70-80) and a high gain for Q2 (110-130). Fuzz Raw - V1 (7 transistor) Fuzz An uncompromising mess of over-the-top fuzz. If you have the right bc108c or bc183l just back off the fuzz control and it will probably will sound better. I think it has to do with the bias of unit and if the silicon transistors are the right gain(lower gain). I think if you know what to look for when trying or buying a silicon fuzz face(find the right one),it can just as good or better than a real nice nkt. Also I love nkt ff's and for me to say this is just what I notice with them. I have had a couple really nice keeper nkt ff's and even then you have that problem to deal with sometimes. I guess old or new it is hard to find a nkt ff that is great for you and it will change everyday a bit because of temp/humidity. Some of the nkt (style)clones I have owned where nothing special and I did'nt do it for me. Our Dark Horse fuzz pedal uses silicon transistors, but is hardly a Rat style pedal. But these are just one component in a pedal of dozens. You can make someassumptions based on the use of either germanium or silicon transistors. I think it is more difficult even if you have a great nkt ff to get great tones out of it everytime you plug in to it. And using silicon transistors doesn’t make a fuzz a Rat style or Big Muff style fuzz. The problem with nkt fuzz face's are that they change with where the moon is at in the sky (or the sun) if you know what I mean. This NKT 275 dual germanium transistor example remains 100 all original and in perfect working condition. It also was a bit clearer and had a cool low mid thing with it. For sale is this very rare late-67 Arbiter Fuzz Face pedal. It also cleaned up as good or better than a nkt 275 fuzz face. With the fuzz knob backed off to 80% or so it sounded like the best nkt fuzz face you could probably ever find. We put two BC183 transistors in each one, which is widely regarded as a happy medium between the potentially mushy compression of germanium and the brash. Let’s explore the origins of this versatile pedal, its varied incarnations, and what it might do for your music. One of The best sounding fuzz face I have had was 68 with bc183l transistors in it. But as everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Jimmy Page, J Mascis, Jack White, Billy Corgan, and Dan Auerbach has proved, there’s truly a massive variety of tones available within these relatively simple bundles of transistors.
